The Samoan Assemblies of God in New Zealand began in 1965 as a result from pioneers of the Samoan Revival that broke out in Western Samoa under the leadership of the late Rev. Makisua Fatialofa and the living legend our mother of Israel, Evangelist Mauosamoa Fatialofa. Our founding father, the late Rev. Lemamea Motu Matia was saved in Samoa and carried the flame of revival with him to the shores of New Zealand, where the Samoan community was thriving. He, alongside others who were saved during the Samoa Revival and migrated to New Zealand, earnestly sought the Lord through prayer and fasting to commence the work in New Zealand. Today, there are over 60 Samoan congregations throughout New Zealand under the leadership of the Most Reverend Tafuna’i To’oseu Muaiava and the fragrance of our movement, First Lady Vaepa.
The Samoan General Council of New Zealand are divided into 5 district councils throughout the two main islands. Each district meets annually in the month of October while the General Council is held annually in the months of March and April (Easter Holiday).
The Samoan General Council has its headquarters in Mangere, Auckland named after one of its founding fathers and leader, the Samani Pulepule Community Centre. It also has a Bible College accredited to Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (APTS) in the Philippines with two campuses, one in Auckland and the other in Wellington and has taught and equipped thousands of young leaders and pastors since its inception in 2011.
The growth of the Samoan Assemblies of God in New Zealand was once known as the fastest growing church in the country, we also boast the southern most Samoan congregation in the World, deep down in the South a small town called Invercagill. The Tokelauan Assemblies of God also come under the Samoan General Council jurisdiction, we are slowly but surely witnessing increase amongst the Tokelauan people.
